Meet Danay,

Customer Service at Bread Poets.
Located at 106 E Thayer Ave, Bismarck, ND.
Open 7a-3p, Mon-Friday.

I recently sat down and visited with Danay of Bread Poets, and learned a little about her corner of the bakery. After knowing her for about two years, it was fun to sit down with her and learn more about her perspective on things.

If you haven’t been to Bread Poets yet, stop in this week and try one of their delicious sandwiches, or pick up one of their products at our grocery stores.

This is the third and final interview in our series. I hope you enjoy reading.

—Phil, Phillip On Food

Danay, customer service, stands behind the front counter of Bread Poets, in downtown Bismarck, North Dakota.

Phil— Hello, Danay! Tell us a little about yourself. What’s life like for you?

Danay— I like spending as much time as I can outside. I like to stay active, I do a lot of walking. My husband, Wes, and I do a lot of different things together. We’ve been married for 39 years, and we have two kids, Haley and Parker. We look forward to visiting our daughter in Arizona and enjoying that. My mom and dad come to Bismarck at times, too. We have a niece that lives in town, her and her husband, and they have a little boy. It’s a lot of family time for us.

Phil— Lot’s of family time, indeed! Are you from Bismarck originally?

Danay— I’m originally from Beulah, but I’ve lived in Bismarck since 1991. I’m married since college, we have our kids here, it’s a good home. When we were first married, we lived in the cities for about 5 years and then moved back here.

We had never lived in Bismarck as adults, but when you’re from a small town, Bismarck was just like going to Disney World. We didn’t come here very much when I was a kid so it was a big thing whenever we did come into Bismarck.

Phil— I know the feeling! When I was younger, we would make the annual trip to Bismarck for clothing and other goods. It was something we looked forward to prior to the start of school.

How long have you worked at Bread Poets?

Danay— Exactly. I started here the day after Labor Day 8 years ago. It was September 6th, 2016. I like it here!

Phil— You have a very clear memory!

What do you like most about working at Bread Poets?

Danay— The people. I’ve always taken care of the customer since I’ve started here, but I’ve actually formed friendships with customers outside of the store. I just love when I see people out and about and we visit for a little bit. It’s the human connection, you know? I know their names, their orders, I have that kind of memory. It’s a blessing and a curse, you could say.

Phil— If someone has never tried a Bread Poets sandwich, what would you recommend?

Danay— Well, the Studebaker, Elliot, and Emerson are all very popular, so folks clearly enjoy those. I think our grain breads are delicious, so one of those.

Phil— What’s something special about Bread Poets?

Danay— Everything being made fresh daily, to our recipes. We’ve had people come in and tell us their kids don’t want to eat regular store-bought bread anymore because it’s not as good.

A few weeks ago, there were some people who came in and got their sandwiches on our white bread. I asked them if they would try a slice of the grain bread to see if they liked it. After trying the bread, they purchased 3 loaves and thanked me for telling them about it!

Phil— The grain breads are my favorites too, so I can’t blame them.

Is there anything you’d like to say to the BisMan Eats community? The floor is yours!

Danay— Just come in and try our food! Come and try something different. We have different breads that you can’t find other places, you know, unless you’re getting our products from a grocery store. I just really love our grain breads, they are something special.
